Let me as a longtime - actually, AoE was the first PC game I ever bought at its launch - fan of the series who has been lucky enuogh to play Spartan/ AoEO for the past month try to clear up some misunderstandings and errors that are expressed here and elsewhere on the web, while hopefully managing to respect the testers NDA in the process
Today I have read anything from "its a browser game" to "a farmville clone" to "I don't want some nerd with no life to come and destroy my capital while I sleep". Others didn't want to "fight against three hundred other guys" and preferred sp experiences.
So let me tell you that it is none of the above. It is not an MMO in the strict sense. It is not a social game, and it is certainly not a browser game. The game does not remove anything from the proven Age formula- it does however add a certain degree of persistence around the core gameplay, similar to how Modern Warfare and Battlefield have added persistent progression elements to their games (and I doubt that anybody would consider either of those MMOs or social games).
So, now that we know what it isn't, one has to wonder: what IS it? Well, it is Age of Empires- easy as that. The gameplay is the same, and has lost little of its depth- still got 4 ressources, infantry, archers, ships, cavalry and siege engines. All missions (they are called quests) are played on a seperate map away from your capital, as they were before. For the purpose of the core gameplay, the capital city might just as well be a graphical represenation of a menu- you choose which mission you want to play from a map, and then start the mission; just as it always has been, though the freedom to choose which mission to tackle is new in Age, while other games have used it before. Also, contratry to browser games, your capital is off-limits- nobody can attack it and destroy it. PVP is purely consentual by using matchmaking as in other rts games- nobody will ravage your empire while you sleep. All gameplay is 100% session based (again, as it was before in Age, or the way it is in MW or BF).
So, what is the capital? You know Home Cities in AoE 3, right? Your capital is your Home City 2.0- it is persistent across missions and pvp; everything you do in the game will help to improve your Capital, by earning you XP to level up - cue obvious comparison to AoE 3 and the aforementioned shooters. Your capital is also where you can craft stuff, and this is where the game is 24/7- like a browsergame, some buildings will produce crafting ressources for you 24/7, while you play, eat or sleep. Again, since I know that hell hath no fury - and short attention span as a nerd scorced - THERE IS NO GAMEPLAY IN YOUR CAPITAL. Everything is session/ mission-based. This is also where te only social aspects happen, as you can visit other players cities t look at them.
To sum it up: the core gameplay is the same; it is Age, it is mission-based, and it is great fun. Nothing was removed, but some persistence added AROUND (NOT IN PLACE) of the core gameplay. I hope that this clears up sme of the confusion and anger, feel free to refer others to this thread.
Finally, if you have just the least bit of interest in rts games or Age (your being here kinda suggests that): try out the beta. Some of you will see that t is great; others will see that it is not for them, but at least everyone will know what the game is, and what it isn't. For me, and most other testers so far, it is great fun!
